What Is Forging Process, Various Applications and Advantages ?
Metal forging is the basic process of forming and shaping metals by the use of repeated hammering, hard pressing and then rolling the metal.
The complete process begins with starting the stock, which is usually a cast ingot (Cogged Billet), which gets heated to plastic deformation temperature, which is finally “kneaded” between the dies to form a desired shape or size.
Types of Available Forging Process:
- Impression or closed die
- Cold forging
Metal forging is the oldest known method for metalworking and is still one of the most effective processes till now. Metal forging is simple process of forming a raw metal without melting the complete material. The metal always remain in a solid form when an hammering operator perform any combination of metal forming process which includes,
- Metal Hammering.
- Metal Rolling.
- Metal hard pressing.
As comparison to Casting process or other metal working techniques, provides the best desirable physical characters which include quality tensile strength at affordable price.
As mentioned in Application of Forgings and their importance, here is the detailed article on Application of forgings
Various Applications of Forging Process:
High Strength, good reliability and price affordability are the needed characteristics for forging application in automobile industry. Forged metals possess these unique characteristics, which make forged parts suitable for application in automobile industry.
Forged components possess good shock absorbing capacity and therefore are found at points of shock and stress such as Forged metals have good shock absorbing capacity and are used in automobile parts likes
- Axle beams
- Wheel spindles
- Torsion bars
- Ball studs
- Pitman arms
- Idler arms
- Steering arms
Forged metal parts are also found in power trains like: connecting rods, driving shafts, the transmission shafts, clutch hubs, yokes and various gears.
VALVES AND FITTINGS:
Forging Process is many times associated with high pressure applications in valves and also in fitting industry because of their porosity and various superior mechanical properties. Many times, corrosion & heat resistant parts are generally used for valves and other fittings like flanges, elbow reducers, saddles and tees etc.
HAND TOOLS & HARDWARE:
Hand tools and hardware are traditionally forged for high quality.
Various examples of forged hand tools and hardware:
- Garden tools
- Wire-rope clips
- Nut & bolts
- HooksTurnbuckles etc.
Forged components are also used for surgical and dental instruments.
MACHINERY & EQUIPMENT:
Metal forging also find application for off highways ad very heavy construction and mining equipment due to high strength, toughness and machinability. The equipment and machinery commonly used in steel, power generation and transmission, paper, textile refinery and chemical industries also use forged applications.
DEFENCE AND ARMED FORCES:
Forged applications are very commonly used in defense, which includes from rifle triggers to submarine shafts.
Common defense related applications of forged components are:
- Rifle triggers
- Nuclear submarine shafts
- Heavy Missiles
- Heavy tanks
- Armored carriers
- Shells etc.
