Selection of Lubricants for Dies

During forging, Die Lubricants play a vital role. This article shall help you in selecting good and reliable lubricants for dies when forging Stainless Steel, Aluminum Alloy, Copper, Copper Alloy, Carbon, and Alloy Steel Forgings

  • STAINLESS STEEL: Oil and graphite mixture are mostly used but oil should be free from lead and sulphur gas is also used as a lubricant in press forging of stainless steels.
  • ALUMINUM ALLOY:  Graphite mixed with water  but if the material flow is a problem in the narrow ribs or cavities  then  soap is added to the graphite  mixture.
  • COPPER AND COPPER ALLOY: Graphite mixed with water is most widely used as lubricant in cu and cu alloy forgings.
  • CARBON AND STEEL: Graphite mixed with water for deep cavities and narrow ribs, while furnace oil used for simple impression  dies.
